First Premier Properties Inc. manages several apartment communities throughout Oregon. As an environmentally conscious company, the sight of garbage containers overflowing with recycling at many of their communities, was very disheartening. Nearby recycling bins frequently became contaminated, forcing them to be dumped as garbage. Not only did this discourage tenants' efforts to recycle, but also increased the communities' garbage expenses. This problem continued despite their efforts to promote recycling. "It seemed that no amount of training at move-in or newsletters were able to maintain recycling at acceptable levels."
We approached President Kristofer Hansen in 2001 and offered our services. At first he was skeptical, unsure of how we could save them money and service their communities six days a week at no additional cost. From day one, we dramatically increased recycling and reduced the amount of garbage being dumped. To their surprise, the serviced properties received an 8% discount off their regular bill and contaminated recycling charges were also eliminated with daily garbage management. Kristofer Hansen's doubts quickly vanished.
